Why Sustainability Matters
Our African and global ecosystems are experiencing severe crises such as floods, drought, famine, malnutrition, poverty, conflict, and war, causing a growing demand for solutions and opportunities that are aligned with regional and global strategies and frameworks such as the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063 (2013–2063) and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Our Target Areas
We focus on addressing environmental challenges across Africa and globally through comprehensive, evidence-based approaches in seven key areas.

Water and plastic pollution are among the most pressing environmental challenges, threatening ecosystems, human health, and sustainable development. Water pollution arises from contaminants such as industrial waste, agricultural runoff, sewage, and oil spills, which degrade water quality, disrupt aquatic life, and reduce access to safe drinking water. Plastic pollution, a major component of water contamination, is particularly harmful because plastics are non-biodegradable; they accumulate in rivers, lakes, and oceans, breaking down into microplastics that enter food chains and pose risks to both wildlife and humans. Together, these forms of pollution undermine biodiversity, food security, and livelihoods, while exacerbating climate and health vulnerabilities, making them urgent priorities for global and regional policy action.

Africa is home to some of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems, including seven Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs), as well as extensive networks of rivers and lakes that sustain rich biodiversity and provide food, livelihoods, and economic opportunities. These aquatic systems host both living and non-living resources, but unsustainable exploitation, pollution, invasive species, and mining effluents are threatening their health and resilience. Aquatic biodiversity—ranging from fish and shellfish to plants and microorganisms across freshwater, marine, and wetland environments—is increasingly vulnerable to human and environmental pressures. Safeguarding these ecosystems through effective conservation is essential to sustain biodiversity, ensure resource availability, and secure benefits for future generations, as stated in the Africa Blue Economy Strategy (ABES) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) Policy Framework and Reform Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture (PFRS).

Land use, agriculture, and food systems are deeply interconnected and lie at the heart of the CAADP (Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme) strategy, which seeks to drive agricultural transformation for inclusive growth, food security, and poverty reduction. Sustainable land use underpins productive agriculture by maintaining soil health, water resources, and ecosystems, while agriculture in turn shapes land use patterns through farming, grazing, and resource extraction. These dynamics directly influence food systems, determining the availability, accessibility, and quality of food. The CAADP strategy emphasizes climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices, efficient land management, and regional integration to boost productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and ensure that Africa’s food systems can meet the growing demand while safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

We champion the application of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) as a tool to ensure that development projects, programs, and plans are comprehensively evaluated for possible environmental and social adverse impacts to our ecosystems. Our EIA’s employ a step-by-step process consisting of robust screening, scoping, impact assessment and mitigation, EIA reporting, review and decision making, as well as monitoring and compliance.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) refers to a framework that guides organizations in integrating sustainability, ethics, and accountability into their operations and decision-making. It provides a holistic approach for assessing how institutions manage risks and opportunities beyond financial performance, focusing on their environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance standards. The strategic pillars of ESG are: Environmental, which addresses issues such as climate change, resource efficiency, and biodiversity conservation; Social: emphasizes human rights, labor standards, diversity, equity, inclusion, and community well-being; and Governance: focuses on transparency, ethical leadership, compliance, and sound management structures. Together, these pillars form a foundation for sustainable growth, long-term value creation, and resilience in businesses and institutions.
